SEAFDEC Information Program Coordinator Ms. Nualanong Tongdee together with Senior Information Officer Ms. Saivason Klinsukhon attended the “Workshop on Fisheries Data Collection and Statistics” which was organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on 26–27 July 2022 through an online platform. The Workshop was participated in by countries in Asia and the Pacific, including six Southeast Asian countries, namely: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The Workshop was aimed at discussing challenges related to data collection, sharing experiences on activities being carried out, identifying solutions and priority needs at the country level, as well as engaging and promoting dialogue between national fisheries agencies, national statistics offices, and regional/international organizations.
During the Workshop, SEAFDEC shared the experiences and information on the ongoing works in supporting the SEAFDEC Member Countries toward improving their capacity in data collection e.g. capacity building on species identification and data collection on some species under international concerns like sharks, rays, anguillid eels, etc.; improving data collection through community-based approach; harmonizing the Regional Statistics Frameworks with the global standards, definitions and classifications adopted by FAO; while also informing that the regional statistics compiled by SEAFDEC are publicized through various channels including statistics database in the SEAFDEC website, Facebook, as well as through specific articles in SEAFDEC publications.
