The Secretary-General of SEAFDEC, Ms. Malinee Smithrithee, Policy and Program Coordinator, Dr. Worawit Wanchana, and Project Planning and Management Division Head of SEAFDEC Training Department, Mr. Isara Chanrachkij, paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of the Department of Fisheries (DOF) of Viet Nam and SEAFDEC Council Director for Viet Nam, Dr. Tran Dinh Luan; Head of Science, Technology and International Cooperation and Alternate Council Director and National Coordinator of SEAFDEC for Viet Nam, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Phoung Dung; Official of Science, Technology and International Cooperation and SEAFDEC Alternate National Coordinator, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung; as well as other senior officials of DOF. The courtesy visit was aimed at strengthening the collaboration between DOF and SEAFDEC to advance sustainable fisheries practices and develop a resilient fisheries sector in Viet Nam.
During the meeting on 5 July 2023 in Hanoi, DOF and SEAFDEC discussed on joint research programs, capacity-building initiatives, and knowledge-sharing platforms. The DOF requested technical support from SEAFDEC in combating illegal fishing and carrying out a fisheries resources survey in Viet Nam waters in 2025 by utilizing M.V. SEAFDEC 2. Furthermore, the two parties also discussed the WWF/GEF Seaweed project as well as the need for a standard definition of small-scale fisheries in the Southeast Asian region.
