SEAFDEC participates in International Fisheries Symposium 2024

To enhance its visibility, SEAFDEC participated in the International Fisheries Symposium 2024 (IFS2024) organized in Hokkaido, Japan on 19–22 November 2024 to promote SEAFDEC activities. SEAFDEC Secretary-General, Dr. Suttinee Limthammahisorn, delivered a keynote speech entitled “SEAFDEC’s Roles in Supporting the Sustainable Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Southeast Asia.”  In her speech, Dr. Suttinee highlighted the status and challenges of fisheries and aquaculture in the region and programs of SEAFDEC addressing various fisheries subsectors.  Additionally, researchers from SEAFDEC Training Department, Dr. Koki Abe and Dr. Suppapong Pattarapongpan, presented the results of their studies on biological parameters of spot-tail shark and fisheries acoustics as well as oceanographic surveys in the region. At the exhibition held alongside the event, SEAFDEC showcased posters, publications, and videos detailing SEAFDEC mission, research and training vessels, fish stock assessment and management, and capacity-building programs.

With the theme “Fish as a Global Food Resource,” IFS2024 is one of the annual conferences of the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN) dedicated to promoting cooperation, knowledge sharing, and innovation for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. The three-day event attracted nearly 200 participants including professors, experts, young researchers, policymakers, and fisheries professionals from the ASEAN Member States and around the world.
