The Senior Information Officer from the SEAFDEC Secretariat, Ms. Saivason Klinsukhon, and Fisheries Management Scientist from SEAFDEC/TD, Ms. Jariya Sornkliang, attended the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Regional Exchange convened in Bangkok, Thailand on 9–10 September 2024 hosted by the USAID Sustainable Fish Asia Technical Support (USAID SuFiA TS) in cooperation with the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF). The Workshop was attended by representatives from CTI countries, namely: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and other countries from Southeast Asia including Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam as well as the relevant partners and SEAFDEC. The objectives of the Workshop were to discuss the establishment of a regional Gender Equality Hub (GE Hub); provide capacity building on grant proposal writing and GESI-sensitive communications and reporting; and develop a communication and knowledge product to document GESI status, success, and challenges in sustainable fisheries management.
One of the highlights of the Workshop was the discussion on the establishment of the GE Hub included priority themes and issues, target outputs and outcomes, evaluation and impact measurement, membership and leadership, administrative and role and responsibilities, coordination and communication, as well as funding and sustainability. The GE Hub would serve as a platform for sharing, learning, addressing, and solving issues affecting the well-being. Moreover, the Workshop also noted the proposal writing techniques; lessons learned on gender integration in fisheries policies and management; gender research on GESI in fisheries; monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL), and GESI outcomes.
