On 2 October 2023, SEAFDEC welcomed Dr. Suttinee Limthammahisorn as its new Secretary-General and Chief of the Training Department, succeeding Ms. Malinee Smithrithee whose term ended on 15 September 2023.
Prior to her appointment at SEAFDEC, Dr. Suttinee was the Director of the Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Division of the Department of Fisheries (DOF) of Thailand. Preceding that, she served as a director of several divisions of the DOF Thailand with the responsibilities of dealing with issues on fisheries management and combating IUU fishing including overseas fisheries and control of transshipment at sea. Dr. Suttinee obtained her B.S. in Fisheries from Kasetsart University, and subsequently her M.S in Technology of Environmental Management from Mahidol University in Thailand. She obtained her Ph.D. in Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures from Auburn University, Alabama, USA.
The nomination of Dr. Suttinee by the DOF Thailand was unanimously approved by the SEAFDEC Council, and her term will run for the period of two years until 30 September 2025. Her background in the development and management of fisheries and aquaculture as well as her involvement in regional initiatives under the ASEAN fora would be instrumental in leading the operation of SEAFDEC and taking up the directives of the SEAFDEC Council toward sustainable development of the fisheries in the Southeast Asian region.
